Michael Mathres brings over 20 years of expertise in climate finance, carbon markets, and sustainable development. As Chief Marketing Officer & Co-Founder of ITMO Ltd., he leads efforts to build the global Compliance Carbon Market under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement, working with more than 50 countries to structure carbon credits that deliver environmental benefits including biodiversity protection and indigenous rights.
His commitment to environmental finance is exemplified through founding the Verbier Summit, the premier sustainability and finance forum in the Alps, dedicated to addressing the trillion-dollar funding gap for climate, nature, and biodiversity initiatives. Previously, as Co-Founder & Director of REDD+Capital, he developed financial products specifically designed to protect biodiversity, nature, and climate through carbon and capital markets.
Mathres's experience includes founding FUND NATURE, where he spearheaded efforts to restore nature and ecosystems through innovative finance. His track record includes co-founding the World Climate Foundation, where he orchestrated major climate conferences during UN COPs from 2010 to 2017, building a network of over 15,000 members and attracting global leaders in sustainability.
Currently, he also serves as a columnist for illuminem, focusing on carbon markets and sustainable finance, and holds advisory positions with ClimateView and Carbon Offset Certification, contributing to the advancement of climate-neutral initiatives in the commodity sector.
