Joel Methorst is a Senior Consultant in the ESG Advisory Team at ERM, focusing on biodiversity, climate risks, and nature-based climate solutions. In his work he combines his ecology background and in depth understanding for scientific methodologies and data with his passion to contribute to a world which is more sustainable and nature-positive. His work includes conducting CSRD ESRS E4 compliant nature assessments, implementing the TNFD LEAP approach or developing carbon offsetting projects.

He holds a PhD in ecology and spent several years working as a researcher at prestigious Germany ecological research institutes such as the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate research Centre (SBik-F) and the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv). Before joining ERM he held the position of Deputy Leader of the Environmental and Climate Research Department at the Hamburg International Economic Research Institute (HWWI).

About:

Dr. Joel Methorst is a Senior Consultant in the ESG Advisory Team at ERM, specializing in biodiversity, climate risks, and nature-based climate solutions. Since April 2024, he has conducted CSRD ESRS E4 compliant nature assessments, implemented the TNFD LEAP approach or developed carbon offsetting projects for clients in the Oil & Gas, IT and Cosmetics sectors.

Previously, Joel served as Deputy Head of the Environment & Climate Research Area at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI), managing projects focused on biodiversity, climate change, and circular economy. He also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Helmut-Schmidt University, exploring the economic and societal impacts of natural disasters and climate change.

Joel earned his PhD in ecology at the Frankfurt University, iDiv & Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, where he studied the effects of nature on human well-being through an interdisciplinary approach combining ecology and environmental economics. His research highlights the critical link between biodiversity and human health, especially mental health.
